The 19th General Assembly of WAREG - European Water Regulators, the Association of European water regulators, gathered under the chairmanship of prof. Andrea Guerrini, Board Member of ARERA-Italian Regulatory Authority on Energy Networks and Environment.
On the agenda, the in-depth analysis on the tariff methods applied by WAREG Member regulatory agencies and on the complete application of the full cost recovery principle in Europe.
WAREG Members are discussing this analysis at a roundtable with the World Bank and the OECD, in Budapest, hosted by the Hungarian Energy and Public Utility Regulatory Authority.
A full report on tariffs in Europe will be presented by WAREG during the first European Forum on the Regulation of Water Services, which will be held in Rome on December 3rd with the participation of representatives of the European Commission, the OECD and other international organizations, as well as with European stakeholder associations.
Therefore, the exchange of experiences continues to increase knowledge and convergence towards a model based on common principles that take into account the peculiarities of the Member States, according to a "contingent" approach to regulation.

More than 20 Regulatory Authorities for water and wastewater services met for the 18th General Assembly of WAREG, the Association of European Water Regulators, hosted by the National Commission for Energy Control and Prices of Lithuania (NCC) in Vilnius.
A report was presented on the role of economic regulators in addressing the capital investment challenges faced by water and wastewater services utilities, that identified a number of key drivers of investment in water infrastructures in Europe, such as: security, sustainability and resilience of water supply, effective wastewater treatment and compliance with environmental standards, appropriate water quality with respect to EU environmental standards, ageing and/or inadequate infrastructure.

WAREG - held its last General Assembly for 2018 on 25 September in Montenegro (Budva) and it reached its 16th meeting. This General Assembly was kindly hosted by the Energy Regulatory Authority (REGAGEN).
The new President of WAREG was nominated, Professor Andrea Guerrini, Commissioner for ARERA, the Italian Regulatory Authority for Energy, Networks and Environment. Mr Alberto Biancardi, past President, stepped down. Professor Guerrini has joined WAREG Board made up by 4 Vice Presidents: Katherine Russell (WICS, Scotland), Szilvia Szalóki (HEA, Hungary), Anthony Sammut (REWS, Malta) and Dimitar Kochkov (EWRC, Bulgaria).

The World Water Forum is the world’s biggest water-related event and is organized by the World Water Council (WWC), the international organization that brings together all those interested in the theme of water.
The World Water Council organizes the Forum every three years together with the respective host country and city. To date, there have been seven editions of the World Water Forum, in different countries, on four different continents. This year has marked the 8th edition of the event and the first time that it took place in the southern hemisphere.

On 5th December 2017, WAREG, the Association of European Water Regulators, was formally established in Milan as a non-profit organisation under Italian law. WAREG’s President, Mr. Alberto Biancardi (Italy), signed the Constitutive Act in the presence of an Italian notary at the premises of the Italian Regulatory Authority for Electricity Gas and Water (Aeegsi). For this purpose, Mr Biancardi was granted powers of attorney by other Members of WAREG to formalize the Association’s establishment. Also present for this milestone event were WAREG’s Vice Presidents, Dr. Szilvia Szalóki (Hungary), Mr. Dimitar Kochkov (Bulgaria) and Mr. Anthony Sammut (Malta).

In preparation for the 8th World Water Forum to be held in Brasilia, Brazil (2018), an online platform has been opened where people from around the world can share ideas, experiences and solutions to improve water management. Everybody, even non-experts can suggest water issues to be discussed at the world’s largest water event and influence the Forum discussions.

A general report on the issue of affordability was issued by WAREG on 10 March 2017. The report elaborated by WAREG provides a description of some approaches used in 17 WAREG Members’ countries to ensure the affordability of water and sewerage charges. It also provides a general overview of the governance frameworks and tools used in those countries. The main objective of this paper is to outline existing practices and to identify possible common patterns in regulatory mechanisms to ensure affordability of water services.

On the 6th of December, the 10th WAREG Assembly took place in Tallinn, Estonia, where Members from Albania, the Azores, Bulgaria, Croatia, Estonia, Georgia, Hungary, Ireland, Italy, Latvia, Lithuania, Romania, Portugal, Scotland and Spain were present. The meeting was hosted by ECA - Estonian Competition Authority Member of WAREG.

The 3rd IWA Water Regulators Forum was held in Brisbane, Australia in the framework of the IWA World Water Congress and Exhibition on 10th October 2016. The venue of the event was soon filled with regulatory delegates and other representatives, including many members of our network.

The meeting was hosted by REWS - Regulator for Energy and Water Services -Malta, Member of WAREG.

A great number of water professionals from more than 70 stakeholders gathered in The Hague for the 7th Meeting of the OECD Water Governance Initiative (WGI). WAREG was also represented by some of its members.

Beginning of June the 8th WAREG General Assembly took place, this time, in Azores, Members from, Belgium , Bulgaria , Croatia , Denmark , Georgia ( New Member), Hungary , Italy , Malta , Romania , Portugal , Scotland Georgia were present. The meeting was hosted by ERSARA - Water and Waste Services Regulation Authority - Azores, Member of WAREG.
The schedule was split between on 2 days of work, 2nd of June the General Assembly followed by a separate meeting on Bechmarking kindly supported by OXERA and 3rd of June Working Groups Meeting.
Every meeting brings the Members closer and strengthen the communication between all helping WAREG to develop.
